§ 1
It is stated in Semachot, chapter eight, that if they wished—they loosen the hair of brides, and they uncover the faces of grooms. And they place ink and a pen by his side, to show that if he were alive he would have written a ketubah for his bride, for the sake of causing grief. And they hang the key of the deceased and his ledger on his coffin if he possessed these things. And all of this is in order to increase the grief. And they make canopies for grooms and brides, and they hang on them things that did not provide sustenance. But things that provided sustenance—it is forbidden, because they become forbidden for benefit. And now we do not do so, and one must not deviate from the custom in that entire place regarding what they do for the deceased.
