§ 1
One who finds an object that he is ashamed to return, for example, he found a sack or a basket, and he is a sage or a respected man whose way is not to take these vessels in his hands and carry them, he is not obligated to attend to them; he leaves it and goes on his way. The sages, of blessed memory, relied on the verse, "and you shall hide yourself from them," implying that there are times when you hide yourself, such as if it is not according to the honor of this finder. The Rambam, of blessed memory, wrote that one must estimate his own mind: if it were his own, would he have returned it for himself? If so, he is obligated to return his fellow's. But if he would not have waived his honor when it was his own and would not have moved it, so too he is not obligated to return his fellow's. Thus far his words, in the eleventh chapter of Gezeilah.
§ 2
If one found a lost item consisting of animals and it is not according to his honor to return it, he shall not touch it. And if he touched it and struck it with his staff or his hand and moved it from its place in order to return it, he is obligated to attend to it and return it even though it is not according to his honor, because he accustomed it to move from its place and it could flee even further and cause more damage. But regarding a lost item that is not an animal, we have no concern with this. And some say that even regarding a lost item that is not an animal, since he began the mitzvah, he is obligated to complete it [Nimukei Yosef chapter 2 in the name of Rashi and the Rambam]. And it appears to me that regarding animals, even if his intention was not to return it, since he moved it from its place, he is obligated to return it; and regarding other things, he is not obligated unless his intention was for the purpose of returning [and this settles what they questioned from Bava Batra 88a, and examine this closely]. And there is a great reason for this, for the Torah only exempted him from the prohibition of "you may not hide yourself," and this prohibition applies when he has not yet begun, as I wrote at the beginning of siman 259; but once he has begun it, he becomes obligated in the positive commandment of "you shall surely return them," and from this the Torah did not exempt him.
§ 3
If it was his way to return such vessels in the field and not in the city, if he found them in the city, he is not obligated to return them. If he found them in the field, there is a doubt whether we say that since it is not his way in the city, he is not obligated at all, or perhaps since in the field he is obligated to begin, and since he began in the field, he is obligated to return it to his house. The Rambam there ruled stringently that he is obligated to return it completely. And some say that he is not obligated to begin with it [Beit Yosef according to the Rosh]. And some say that he is obligated to return it until the city and leave it, and in this it is not relevant to say regarding living creatures that since he accustomed it to move from its place it will flee, for on the contrary, he brought it to a place where it is more guarded than in the field [Rosh according to the Rif, and were it not for his words, it could be said that the Rif is not dealing with living creatures, and see there in the Nimukei Yosef]. And the main point is according to the opinion of the Rambam [the Gra].
§ 4
The Rambam, of blessed memory, wrote: One who walks in the good and upright path and acts beyond the letter of the law returns the lost object in every place, even if it is not according to his honor. And there are those who disagree and forbid returning it when it is not according to his honor because he degrades the honor of the Torah; rather, if he wishes, he should pay from his pocket. And this only applies if he is a talmid chacham, but if his honor is due to wealth or another matter, they agree with the Rambam that he may be stringent upon himself [and this is what Rava said ibid. 30a: "Anything that for his own he would return, etc.," for in the Baraita it only deals with the honor of the Torah, and he adds other types of honor as well, and the difficulty of the Beit Yosef is resolved; see there].
