A mourner is obligated in the covering of the head. This too we derive from Yechezkel, for the Merciful One said to him: "Do not cover your mustache" – from which it is inferred that everyone else is obligated (Moed Katan 15a). This means that he should cover his head with a tallit or a kerchief, and wrap part of it over his mouth and over the tip of the nose, and this is called the "covering of the Ishmaelites." These words apply in that he requires covering all day when he is alone. However, when comforters come to him – he uncovers his head from this covering out of respect for them. But in our lands, they have not practiced this covering, as it would lead to mockery. This was only according to their custom in their lands with a kerchief around the head. Now, among us, the covering is to pull the hat down before the eyes. It is proper for a mourner not to remove the hat from his head all seven days, and to sit in this manner if it is possible for him.
