The niddah and the zavah do not emerge from their impurity by washing in a bathhouse, and even if all the waters in the world came upon her, she remains in her impurity and one is liable for karet on her account, until she immerses her entire body at once in the waters of a mikveh or a spring that contains forty se'ah of water. Their measure is a cubit by a cubit by a height of three cubits in a square, using a cubit of six handbreadths and half a finger. If it is wider and not as high, it is kosher if her entire body can be covered by them at once. It must amount in total volume to 44,118 fingers, measured by the thumb finger and another half finger. So wrote our teacher, the Beit Yosef, in section 1.
